Festivals Prior to Galungan: Penampahan

On Galungan eve or Penampahan, people are expected to eradicate the animal nature within them, so they will be descent to celebrate Galungan. That ideology is symbolized through slaughtering the sacrificial animals that will go into temples or altar offerings. It is common to butcher swine for Penampahan, yet it is also possible to have another animal as the sacrificial living thing, such as chicken.
Swine is considered as the symbol of laziness, thus sacrificing swine means eliminating the laziness. Curved bamboo poles decoration with elements of harvests and natural items, such as rice, fruit, coconuts, and leaves – Penjor – are the obligate ornament for Galungan. Penjors symbolizes the blessing by Mother Nature.
